Default '99 A6 Water Pump Issues? Need advice. Thanks.

AW,

I've got a buddy with about 75,000 miles on his '99 A6. He's in for timing belt service and his service guy is recommending he replace the water pump too. It's not "required" now but the guy is telling him its more of a "preventative mtn" type thing.

Does this sound on the up and up?

Let me know. Thanks.

Matt

Default Whoa! Easy, big fella. I'm not the most knowledgeable on the subject. That's why I posted.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Default It's a smart thing to do

Given what has to be disassembled for the timing belt job, and the relatively small additional cost of the pump, it's almost silly not to replace the pump.

I would do it. It works both ways too - if pump needs replacing..then do belt as well. Good luck!

I agree. It's all about the labor.

Default There's a few other cheap parts to replace while they're in there...

I just had mine done at 77K miles. I also had the thermostat, termostat seal, serpentine belt, crankshaft seal. Better to do all this while the engine is accessible. Labor is essentially free. All of the above, including timing belt and water pump cost $600 at the dealer.
