A6 2.7T -- CV boot or CV joint?

...for my Audi 4000Q. It was split with interlocking rubber lips and about 4 or 5 mini nuts & bolts to hold it together along the split after it was in place.
It held enough for me, although I sold the car about 6 months later - but I heard afterward that those types of boots didn't work so well (maybe they let dirt in through the split as they flex?).
Got it from Trak Auto when they were still around.

to replace the half axle shaft in question. You get the whole nine yards, for little more money than replacing the joint and not that much more than replacing just the boot. The labor is similiar for all three. I got a half axle shaft for $100. Be sure that it is OEM quality.
