Anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with going past the recommended 75k timing belt change on these cars? I am usually a stickler for maintenance but have heard several people say the belts look like new when taken out even beyond the mileage. I may not be keeping the car past 100k and would prefer to save the +1000 but at the same point I don't want to do so if it is not safe. Thanks.

not at all safe! And it does not matter what the belt looks like. Whoever is talking to you is not experienced. The failure mode is that a component like a water pump, idler, or other component begins to fail and drag, and takes out the belt. When it goes, it si catastrophic, nearly always. Kiss your engine good-bye.
The ogiginal Audi interval was 105k. Some say ( queue Jeremy Clarksen) thsi was to put it beyodn the 100k mile maint interval. Then Audi revised it down to 60k. Most of us here think 75k is a good compromise.
of course, most will go far longer. So youhave to ask yourself: "do i feel lucky?"
Well, do you?

I did mine at 94550 in March 2007. I have a friend with a 2001 S4 at 112k who has not done his. I personally think 85-90k is a good interval but the age of the car also matters -- an 8 year old TB may not have the lifespan of a 4-5 year old TB. I plan on doing my second TB around 160-170k. Right now I'm at 143k.
