I assume it's a joke, but both the 2.8 and 2.7 are from the same block, aren't they? I thought the 2.8 was just bored out more giving a slightly higher displacement. I don't remember where I heard this so correct me if i'm wrong!

No. the joke would be, as i see it, that the 2.7 is a bi-turbo design in which the exhaust manifold feeds to the turbo housing - which doesn't exist in the normally aspirated 2.8. While i have nto traced them side by side, they should be totally different.
The 2.8 is not bored out. It is the original. The 2.7 is de-bored, and changed in about 100 ways, to make a far more robust lower end. forged cranks, under-piston oil sprays, larger sumps, etc. etc. This allows the 2.7 to sustain the pressure and the power oftwo turbos, which, in some guises (like RS4) produced some 400+ hp where the 2.8 began life at 172.
