This isn't rocket science, you are trying to get more HP by letting the engine breath easier. To do that you get a K&N that doesn't restrict the airflow as much.
The subject gets interesting when the filters get dirty. The K&N has typically has less surface area and coarser filtration so when it is dirty the engine breaths harder (the filter is restricting air flow compared to a standard filter) and you are sucking more crap into the engine (filtration is coarser with the K&N). Those were the results from the "scientific test". The guy didn't have the exact right particulate media but as I recall he had the right test setup to measure filtration (collection of particles after the filter) and air flow restriction (pressure drop across the filter with a known volume of air passing through the filter).
Go to a Home Depot and look at some differant grades of furnace filters. Try taking your air filter out and going around the block to see if the car is faster.
Keep it clean or stay stock. I can barely beat a Honda Civic in a drag race so getting more HP is the least of my concerns. You could always stay stock and drag race KIA Sportages like I do.
