Is the A6 4.2 slow or what?
Met with a buddy of mine with his C5 A6 4.2L with 87k miles. I know the dude, hes a preventative maintenance person so little things that didn't need replacing have been replaced. I mean I know that hes done MAF, Spark Plugs, Air + Fuel + Oil Fitler, O2 Sensors, and a recent oil change. It picks up great, but we came next to a 1998 BMW 528 and off the line he had us and we barely caught up. I can't even imagine a 530i or even a 540i. I wonder if we would've had more of a shot had he had the 2.7T

It's slowww, I own a '02 S6 4.2 and agree - I also owned an allroad with a 2.7 and it was slower stock than the 4.2 but if you did the ecu performance mod the 2.7 would be quicker. For myself I ended up putting on a PES Eaton 90 supercharger on the s6 and that made all the difference - not slow anymore. I've had it for over a year now and I'm really happy with the difference it made but these types of mods will run a bit of money.

why would you even "race" him? BMW drivers are by far the most arrogant *******s ive ever met...
YES there are exceptions but you all know for the most part they think their **** dont stink because they lease a bmw

Hmm. Not to me. Its slow-ish off the line, but once going, my S6 accelerates quickly and more of less forever. 0-60 in 6.1 sec, but it feels much faster than that between 20 and 100. Above 90 or so the Aero characteristics likely come into play.
i dont street race, but when i need to get around someone on a twisty, it pulls like a freight train.
note the S6 has much lower (higher numerical) final drive.

Quit hating and no BMW enthusiast are great owners, BMW snobs aka husbands and wifes are snobs. I drive a 540i myself and I'll never go back just sayin. No problems. Great motor, and the tranny is from the same company from Porsche which happen to be the strongest.

Just FYI - Audi, Porsche and BMW all use ZF auto tyrannies. For instance, a 996 C2 is a ZF 5HP19. An Audi S6 is a ZF 5HP24a. BMW use them too - along with (until some years ago) Hyra-Matics (yes, GM). My 528 had a Hyrda-matic in it. Far less failure prone than the ZF.
If you meant manuals, Porsche uses a combination of VW/Audi trannies (e.g.: 986 boxster has a Audi 01e),and porsche's own. They are migrating toward Aisin however.

The 540i and X5 both use the same ZF HP24a transmission as the 4.2, S6 and RS6

Alright well there your clearly wrong. Porsche and some BMW models use Getrag transmissions. Oh and I meant manual not the slush box which everyone seems to fail at. My mechanic just built an Ultima GTR using an LS7 Corvette V8 with a flipped Porsche Getrag transmission with a housing adapter to make it bolt up. Unfortunately the best cars get the worst transmissions it seems, otherwise the RS6 would've been great. After going through 2 ZFs on my A6 broken reverse and shuddering reverse in the 740iL I had I called it quits and got a 540i with a 6-Speed. No more issues.
