I will try to keep this short and to the point. Looking for any helpful information.
2001 A6 4.2 with 120 miles
Transmission was not engaging 4th or 5th gear anymore. 1st to 3rd smooth and no problems.
if foot on gas pedal, transmission would slip (thump) from 3rd to 4th, then limp mode.
if foot off the gas, 4th would try to engage, raise rpm, try 5th, raise rmp again, then limp mode.
Incorrect gear ratio code for 4th and 5th.
Full transmission flush with new fluid, filter and gasket filled with vagcom at proper temperature.
No change. Codes still appear.
1,000 miles later, merging on the highway, before 3rd, limp mode. Turn car off and back on. No gears engage at all, including reverse.
Towed car back home.
Tried a replacement TCU / TCM with vagcom clearing codes, reset and hard reset method using ignition and gas pedal.
No gears. when selecting any of the gears (R, D), the rpm raises a bit then drops back down.
Decided to check fluid level. When trying to re-fill, vagcom temperature of ATF did not seem to increase. 15 minutes with the car running, only increased from 7 Celsius to 10-11 Celsius.
Unplugged and replugged main transmission connector, towards front left of the car. No change. Transmission pan was cold to the touch even after letting the car run for 15 minutes.
Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. I need to decide if i get this fixed or sell it as is. I've read a lot of stories/forums and some decided to rebuild for similar "incorrect gear ratio" issues and did not fix the problem. I want to be sure the rebuild will fix my problem.
Also read a few stories including the torque converter. Could the TC cause all gears including reverse not to engage?
I hope i posted all relevant information.
TIA

In most auto trans the TC drives the hydraulic pump. In some trans the tangs on the tc that drive the hydraulic pump shear or more likely shear the hookup into the hydraulic pump.
In any case, at this point you'll have to pull the trans/tc and examine them to see what the problem is. But it sounds like the hydraulic pump isn't (pumping) therefore you'll have to at least pull the trans/tc.
Least expensive solution appears to be to install a good used tc/trans that matches your exact engine and car.

Thanks for the input. I guess i'm just trying to rule out all other possible problems besides the mechanical failures of the actual transmission before deciding to replace it or rebuild it.

Would the failure of that pump be cause of the transmission not warming up?
