A6 Automatic Problem

98 A6 avant with 2.8 and automatic. Come to a stop in drive, car will not move, engine revs up only. Shift to first gear with lever, car pulls away just fine. No good shifting to second or third while stopped. Only first, or reverse. Once moving, can mauually shift to any gear or put in drive with no problem. Upshifts and downshifts just fine. Come to a stop, car will not move again. Getting a better code reader to look tonight, but no codes have come up. Any ideas?

Second of all, your trans is probably toast.
Let me guess: If you put the car in drive it doesn't go, but if you gradually increase rpms up to about 3500, it drops into gear (second) with a bang and takes off.
Been through this exact same issue last year in the bro-in-law's 96. Apparently there are different forward clutches for D and 1. I spent hours diagnosing, swapped TCU's, did output tests, etc. Bad trans.
STFA under my ID on the 100/A6 forum. Good luck.

Found this out after I pulled the transmission on my 99 A6 Quatro 2.8 and reinstalled the rebuilt unit. Weird shifting prompted me to read the owners (idiot) manual which describes the limp mode as opposed to the Bently manual which did not. Had to get the VAG Com software to reset the codes which can get flagged by the transmission module as intermittent failures and force into limp mode. Apparently this can happen even if the wire harness is disconnected or if the connection becomes wet. For some reason the software reads an open circuit as open, short to ground, or intermittent. Once this happens the only thing you can do is reset with the VAG Com and hope it clears. In my case it did and ran fine thereafter. Good Luck!
