Default A6 Avant Rant

I am new to AW and Audi ownership. I recently purchased a 2000 A6 Avant, Quattro, Tip, 2.8, 41K. I have owned three VW's (currently the other car is an '03 Passat). I felt that being in the VW "family," the Avant would be a good choice and a great alternative to an overpriced SUV.

So far (in four weeks of ownership) I have had two engine oil leaks, a sticky front passenger window, an annoying warning light that says "Brake Light" and a broken console cup holder. WTF? I am taking it in tomorrow to fix these things, for the LQ recall and an alignment. I am also REALLY glad it's certified.

Other than that, my wife and I LOVE the car. Somebody please convince me that I shouldn't sell this car soon.

Default Certified doesn't mean perfect, just means you bought a used car....

for which you wont have to shell out cash on repairs.

I bought my car CPO back in January. Fortunately for me, the car was in perfect condition - but I paid for that too - $41k for a '01 A6 4.2, 12.5K miles. When I say perfect, I mean flawless.

Default Give it a chance...

Get the fixes and see how it goes over a longer period of time. The problems were no doubt there when you bought the car and it seems like these things are all occuring at once. Maybe these things didn't bother the previous owner and he/she let them go. Hopefully, you can get them fixed and have a relatively problem free future.

Default Get the things fixed and drive on!

The brake light is a DIY operation. The oil leak should be looked at of course but other than that there's nothing there that would make me walk away from the car.

Default Re: Your Car is Great

...just got back from a racing road trip with 2 racers, 2 bikes, 1 dog, a ton of gear, and made the return trip with 2 ofr my original wineglass wheels.
And...I did it in comfort and style...plus saw an RS6.
Enjoy the car.

Default Geez, you should take better care of your car!

Kidding, of course.

I have a 99 A6 avant I bought certified with 54k miles. The dealer had to replace front CVs, gaskets from 2 oil leaks, new pads and rotors and tires prior to my purchase.

Now I have 62k miles and have occasional stalling problems (stalls constantly if you take your foot off the throttle, but then you let it sit overnight, drive it the next day things are fine for months, then another spell of stalling, then gone), as well as a broken 'child protection' swtch for the windows (rear pass can't operate windows), radio is broken (to be replaced this week), occasional 'groaning' noises when turning or compressing front pass side, A/C is low on freon apparently (leak somewhere probably) etc.

This is an assured car purchased 6 months ago.

Oh, and the dealer hasn't gotten me my plates yet, either. They forgot to have the CHP certify it before selling it to me so I have to email them photos of the VIN to prove to the CHP the car is legit.

Beyond that, they didn't smog it, but charged me $50 for the smog fee and told me to get it done and they'd pay me back. I got it done for $40, so they should have sent me $50 (I noted this in a letter to them with the reciept) and they still only gave me $40 - they PROFITED $10 on my time for something they should have done prior to sale!!!

I have asked repeatedly for the records of what they repaired prior to selling it to me while "Assuring" it, and I have seen nothing.

How's THAT for a rant?

That was all with CARLSEN Audi in Palo Alto...

Now I've moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where Holman Audi cares for it. Sort of.

The dealer wouldn't even ASK AoA to replace my bumper b/c the damage wasn't bad enough (it's torn at the bottom), (see pic) and they didn't reset the 'oil' warning on the odometer as I asked (oil recently changed by jiffy lube (for shame, but no choice)), and they didn't remember to order the window switch, so I had to wait an extra 3 weeks for the part and appointment.

So, I've owned Audi's since 1988 and this is what I put up with. I have to say, I also am not aware that, aside from the styling, Audi has made much progress.

Nevertheless, I will keep buying them. This car sure makes my wife's '98 E430 look nice some days...

What's everyone else's reaction to this? Normal, par for the course? Acceptable? Any choice?

Default Sorry to hear, but...

stories like these make me cringe. Audi owners are gluttons for punishment. I have read story after story on this board about relatively low mileage Audis experiencing all sorts of problems - even Audi Assured. I've owned two new Audis, but neither was/will be with me outside of warranty and neither ever had any problems remotely close to what many of you folks are experiencing.

IMHO, the types of problems you are experiencing are inexcusable. To put things in perspective, my '87 325e and '91 535i had close to 180k miles combined (105k & 75k, respectively) when traded and neither ever required more than normal maintenance and wear & tear items (e.g., tires, exhaust, batteries, etc). I never had nagging troubles with things like electronics, AC, stalling, etc. In fact, when I sold the 325e, it still had the original clutch - and going strong! When I sold my 535i at 75k, I was told it was just getting broken in and I was crazy to sell it. Why people put up with chronic gremlins in Audis barely out of warranty, I'll never understand - and I love my A6! Good luck w/ your A6.

Default Re: Sorry to hear, but...

I have heard more words of encouragement than discouragement. Thanks for the support. I AM going to give it a try, because my wife and I LOVE the car. I previously owned a '95 Golf and '96 Jetta. I bought the Jetta new in Oct. '96 and drove it 96K. The car ran strong until the day I sold it and I got $4650 for the car when it was nearly 7 years old. That's why I came back to VW for an '03 Passat and a another car in the VW "family." Maybe Audi is just the proverbial "black sheep." Or maybe that's SEAT. I don't know.

Thanks. I promise I'll have more informative posts in the future. And, I'll post a follow up and let you know how the repairs go at Byers Imports, Columbus, Ohio.
