A6 Drivers door switch failure-common ?

My 99 A6 Avant door switch has failed. When you open the drivers door the interior lights do not come on. Any other door will turn them on. The problem is compounded because this doesn't let the car know someone got out so after a while it re-arms the alarm. Question is: have any of you had this failure and do you have to replace the whole inside door latch assembly ? looks like all 1 unit

It's not common but it does fail.Yes, you have to replace the whole latch. Last I saw it costs ~$185

my switch does not seem to work, the car does not turn lights on, or does it recognize the door is open, does not ding if lights left on or if door is open, so is my whole assembly screwed up? does anyone know what i need to do?
