Default Any quattro equipped A6 is better than FWD. 2001+ also had traction control.

FWD with good snow tires is almost as good as AWD with all season tires. AWD with good snow tires is as good as it gets.

2.7T and 4.2 are very similar in quickitude. 4.2 is more rare and delivers more Autobahn cruiser feel.

Traction controll CAN in some cases be a performance detractor

Amazing what three little plastic/chrome badges can do for traction.

Had my first snow this week in FWD CVT A6, both with Eagle RS-A in the morning and Semperit Sport Grip in the afternoon.
ESP came on once or twice in corners, at low speed, did not try stupid things like I did last winter in quattro, but so far do not see that I missed a lot by buying FWD...

I've had both the 2.7 and 4.2, and I used my stock 16" Conti all seasons on stock wheels for winter and 17" BBS RCs for summer, but got a set of 16" stock 4.2 wheels and put Winter M2s on them. The 17" with 255/40-17 Contis were useless in snow.

I had the same issue previously with my '95 S6. The low profile stock 225/50-16 were horrible. Put winter tires on them and got 17" BBS RX for summer.

IMHO, on the high performance Audis, quattro is trumped by the high performance summer rubber in winter. Switch to appropriate size winter tires and you can climb mountains.

FWIW, I just got Conti Extreme Contacts for my wife's Cross Country, and they are awesome. Z-rated M&S.

Ditto to Potomac2.7: the 4.2 has a bigger, more powerful feel to it; the 2.7 lighter and more nimble.
