There is no foundation for the Passat being ranked ahead of the A6. There is only one thing the Passat does better...cost less, that's it, but that is usually not how cars are ranked.
Placement of a particular car within these rankings is foolish as many of these are truly not comparable. Car and Driver does a better job at this meaningless ranking and just makes a top 10 with no individual rankings.

Otherwise the list would be loaded with very expensive cars like Mercedes and Ferraris where they can provide all the best quality and design because money is no object.
I would submit that you can't make any sensible ranking of cars without considering cost.
I guess I'm not nearly as angry about the Passat being ahead as you are.

Pardon my sckepticism but it's entirely possible the new one could be a mechanical disaster. I can't get behind ranking the A4 up there this year. Last year: yes. Next year: probably.
We just squeaked in. Hmm.
Autoweek has always liked the A6, even when C&D wouldn't even look at it twice due to the lack of power.

Just making the point that these "Best Car" things are meaningless. Within a particular class of car, one could make arguments (friendly, of course) that one car is better or not, but not across classes...it is foolish.
BTW: I would not necessarily say more expensive is better. Ferraris, Lambos, McLarens, Rolls, Bentley, etc are not necessarily better just because they cost more. With a lot of very high-end cars, if you drive more than 1k a year...you'll be spending a lot of time in the shop.
