Propellor shaft is my guess. Still. Mine did the same thing. Intermittant vibes and noise and speeding up or slowing down did not necessarily change it.

A physical inspection is needed. Get the car in the air and remove the heat shield to expose the shaft. Grab ahold and wiggle. You'll be able to tell pretty quick I bet.

You can also get all four corners off the ground and run it and maybe you can feel/hear the problem area. I could.

I'm just old enough to remember 'delerium tremens' Latin for shaking frenzy. Sounds about right.

Not sure if that was what Grant was referring to but it is apropos of what a failing center shaft feels like.

Ok all is not well. Garage can only find movement in offside front driveshaft into gearbox. Seems there is no other movement anywhere else but although they can feel the problem they can't be 100% that its faulty. New transmission is only way to rule it out. Seems my quattro ownership maybe very short lived.

No. New mechanic and new garage first. Did they pull the heat shield and inspect the center shaft?

No. Did go in and see for myself. The o/s drive flange has about 4-5mm of lift in it, where as none of the others have.
To get to prop would need exhaust dropping, and despite all the pulling and tugging I couldn't get it to move.
I believe this is not the way to check that then?
