A6 Rear Cupholder Removal / Repair
The rear seat cupholders in my 1999 2.8Q are all kinds of stuck. One won't stay retracted, the other won't open. Is this a common problem? Does anyone know how to remove / replace them? Its a blemish on my otherwise lovely interior. I know there is a .pdf file on this somewhere, but I couldn't open it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: A6 Rear Cupholder Removal / Repair
I just had mine out yesterday; the trim piece pry's off, it has tabs all the way around so I used a small flat screwdriver and it came right off. Once the trim is off, there are two slots over each cup holder about 5/16" wide and 1/8" deep, seems as sticking the screwdriver in those slots released the cup holder tray from the chassis.
Here's the bad news, mine was sticking because my daughter had steped on it. The tray has a guide slot in it about 2/3 the way back, this is the week link where it cracked. When I had it out I could see that the part was no longer straight causing it to bind in the chassis of the cup holder.
I tried a torch and some pressure to straighten the plastic then some grease but in the end I just need a new one.

According to the Bentley Repair Manual...
you should remove the rear bench seat to access the cupholder tabs properly.
I posted this a few months back when someone else was asking about a stuck cupholder. Hopefully, it is just spilled juice that is making it stick. According to the parts department, they do not carry the part seperately...comes with the rear bench, but maybe someone with the ETKA parts list can confirm.

rear cupholder post

Both mine are stuck in, but have some play; they aren't 'glued' in...
...they move in and out just a hair, but don't relase and come out. I pulled the seat up, but beneath was nothing but continuous foam. I'll bookmark Boston and marccm's posts and tackle it eventually. For now I have more pressing issues. Good luck with it...and take photos if possible!
