I did not do the rear fog mod as others have done, but I did do this:
replaced the rear fog lamp with a 50 watt version of the same bulb (really damned bright) and..( no switch burnout..
using an auxiliary switch/relay and lead from the battery and installed xenons in my clear backup lamp housings.. They are either hooked into the rear fog switch or off completely. Ran into some fog over the Grapevine this weekend, and it kept the "tailers" off of my the whole trip. I am very careful now only to use them in dense fog, but they are a good alternative to just that 50watt rear fog lamp.

about the beam pattern? That has to be absolutely blinding if not illegal?

Let us know the condition of the lens and connector on the fog lamp mod.
I would think your backup light mod is illegal and potentially dangerous. A follower could perceive it as oncoming headlights and swerve off the road or into oncoming traffic to avoid it. Especially in heavy fog when it would be difficult to determine if the lights are truly attached to the front or back of a car. Drivers are trained to recognize white lights as a vehicle approaching. Even when backup lights are used in the traditional way, they indicate an approaching vehicle to other drivers.
