Out of curiosity more than anything, I asked Crutchfield if A6 stereos can be upgraded.

Their reply:

"In answer to your question about speakers for your 2000 Audi A6, I have some
bad news, I'm afraid. The bad news is that unfortunately, the only
specifications we have are for the Bose-equipped system. If any part of the
Bose system is replaced the entire Bose system must be removed and replaced.
This is due to the unique wiring and amp system with the Bose gear. Also,
even if speakers were replaced, the modifications appear to be heavy as far
as fitting aftermarket speakers in your Audi. I would not recommend
replacing the speakers. I wish I had better news there.

I hope this information is helpful, though it's probably not what you wanted
to hear. Thanks again for your e-mail. Please let me know whenever you need
anything else!

That information is correct as far as it goes. The Bose system uses discrete amplifiers at each speaker, so the entire speaker/amplifier module must be removed, and amplification provided either from a central source. Alternately, there are some small amplifier modules available that could be employed.

The bottom line is that upgrading the Audio system on the A6 is a serious and expensive job. While the Bose system likely had it's attractions for Audi, due to the distributed amplification, it's a mess for the customer who wants to upgrade.
