A6 vs 2005 passat

Currently have a 99 2.8q with 52K miles and am looking to get into something newer/faster/better etc.
This is actually a 2 part question, does the 4.2 warrant its much heftier price tag? If one could do it all over again, would they a chipped 2.7T over a 4.2 or vice versa? Ive also read on the board that the 2002 year was the best, any comments on that?
The 2nd part of my question is, im guessing a low mileage 2001-2002 2.7T and possibly 4.2 will be in the same price range as a high end 2005 passat. What do you think would be the best long term buy? Im looking to use the car for the next 5 years(im sort getting tired of thinking of my "next car" a year after I just got one)

You'll feel the difference right away. If you're looking for a lighter, 7/8's size A6 with less expensive interior materials, then you'll enjoy the Passat.
The A6 is just a more solid feeling vehicle. I would love to move into a C5 A6 4.2 from my 2.8. Someday.

I think I may actually go with the 4.2 if prices drop to around 30. Are there any major issues between 2000/2001/2002 models that I should be aware of?

The look of the 4.2 is assertive, with the fender flairs, and I highly reccommend the sport package.
Passats are fine cars but are just too vanilla. When I encounter another 4.2, it's special.

I am a 2002 A6 4.2 owner who was recently in an accident with a red light-runner. The offending pick up truck struck my brilliant black beauty just in front of the left front wheel. $16,000 worth of damage. Back to new (pre-collision) in about 3 weeks, so I'm driving a rental mini-van.
While I was awaiting the determination (total loss or repair) I took a hard look at many cars-- from the '04 Allroad 4.2 to the MB E500. Nothing, and I mean nothing, comes close for under $60,000. I'm speaking specifically of the A6 4.2 model year 2002-- thicker leather, thicker and more comfortable bucket back seats, tiptronic shifting and volume controls on the steering wheel to name but a few things that I love about this model year.
I looked very seriously at a friend's 2001 Allroad (2.7T) with its custom brakes, painted body panels, custom wheels, and many extras (it's a dealership owner's personal car)-- even it wasn't as interesting or smooth.
I realize that Audi's bringing a new model design to the market in a year, and it may even have 35 more horses under the hood, but currently the 2002 package is very hard to replace having once gotten used to it.
A Passat? I suppose one might find it adequate compared to a used A6, even a 4.2, but if you are looking for more than adequate then test drive both and you'll find no comparison worth discussing here. Whatever you do, please return with your observations.

Visually, they're identical. You're much more apt to find a Sport Package on an '01 since it was offered all year. (It was a late offering on 2000s.) I think most here agree that the Sport Package is highly desirable. Also, 2001s came with a 4 year 50K mile warranty as opposed to 2000s which came with 3 years/50K. 2001 was the only year you could get Nemo Blue, a HIGHLY desirable color IMO. It was only ever offered on '01 4.2s, so it's very exclusive.
2002s introduced exposed exhaust tips, amber rear turn signals, 6-disk in-dash CD changer, and Tiptronic buttons on the steering wheel (which were subsequently dropped after 2002).
There are other small details such as color choices, differences in equipment bundling, and standard features. I'm happy to provide more info if you need it.

The Passat is much more a Volvo/Saab competitior. The A6 more of BMW/Mercedes competitior.
Vastly different options. FYI, unless they've changed it recently, a 4Motion Passat sedan does not get fold down rear seats. The Passat does however have an adjustable vent that can blow cool air into the glovebox. That is just some of the differences from a standard equipment standpoint you should consider.
