A6 vs. Passat
#11
That's the great thing about opinions
That's why I said that skategoat had to drive them both and decide, but I wouldn't dismiss a Passat so quickly. And I sure as hell hope that Audi continues to have a higher level of fit and finish; that's one of the things we're paying a premium for!

The ONLY Passat that can stack up to the A4/A6 is the 4Motion V6...Quattro is the key!
The only Passat with an independent rear suspension is the 4Motion V6 and only the
GLX trim level of that is a reasonable comparison.
Also I agree with Steve that the Audi interiors
are much more stylish and better designed/layed out.
My $0.02...

I didn't dismiss it quickly
I would have figured you read my post. I talked my own brother into a 4Motion Passat. Do you think I would steer my brother into a car I dismiss? I talked another friend into a normal (2.8) Passat.
I'm not dismissing the Passat. It just isn't better than an A4 in any way except space and price.
I heartily agree with your comment that we didn't necessarily buy Audis because it was a totally sensible move. Buying a Passat is perhaps the "thinking man's" move.

Much better than Jag. Slightly ahead of Mercedes.
Just compare the plastic seat skirt between the A6 and S. The S has a flimsy piece with flashing still attached.
Pull the door panels off of all of them. You would be amazed at the difference in packaging ! The Jag looks like any domestic or older Euro car - plastic film and lots of breakable looking bits. The S has fiber-board (!) liners with a few tubes for re-inforcement. The Audi has double layer panels, beams, and custom shaped ballistic foam.
Those are the parts you don't see ! Just think what else must differ.

Re: A6 vs. Passat
i drove the passat 4motion wagon and the a6 avant
both are nice cars, i decided on the a6
the passat rear seat headrests have to be removed
to fold the seats down, i didn't care for that

Re: A6 vs. Passat SEATS!
I did a VERY serious comparison this fall. I own an A4 1.8t Avant. I compared the A6 Avant and the Passat. The biggest difference was that the Passat had the smallest seats! No kidding, smaller at the bottom cushion length than the A4.
This meant less support under the legs.
Also, the seat back is a different design that what Audi uses. While the Passat GLX does have a Lumber support, it's "junk" compared to the A6.
(The A4 does not have lumbar adjustment.)
The net of the search was that for $7500 more, I bought the A6!
