Default A6 or VW Passat...what car??

I've finally conceded that the A4 Avant is too small for the family, so I need to upsize. The current preferred options are a 2001 A6 3.0 litre quattro sedan, or a similar vintage Passat 4Motion sedan. Firstly I'm having trouble finding out the physical dimensions and weight of the Passat....can anyone help? And what's the consensus....should I go for the A6 or the Passat? For the same money as the 3.0 litre A6 I could get a W8 Passat.

Default Totally different animals. The Passat is based on a lengthened and slightly less rigid B5 A4.

The C5 A6 could also be considered an offshoot of the B5, but it's substantially revised with different suspension, wiring, options, etc. It's also wider and slightly longer. Keep in mind the '01 Passat will have the 2.8 vs the 3.0. The W8 arrived later. I really like the W8, but find the Passat chassis a bit creaky when compared to the A6 (you lose the fold down rear seats in the Passat 4Motion in an attempt to stiffen things up).

What qualities are most important to you? Handling, safety, luxury, acceleration, image, size, etc? How about warranty? Will the cars you consider come with a warranty and what dealer or independent will serve you best? Are there options you really would like to have that may or may not be available on one or the other?

Drive both - preferably back to back on the same day. I'm betting one or the other will stand out more than the other.

The A6 is a much more substantial feeling car.

Default Wasn't 02 the start of the 3.0?

I was under the impression 01's were still 2.8.

I don't have a clue what Europe got however...

Yeah.........I guess my preferences would be for the physically smaller of the two, the safest (one reason why I want 4 wd), the best handling and peforming. The luxury/prestige/comfort things don't do too much for me.
I'm now on my third A4 (all 1.8T's, 1 sedan and two Avants) and would stay with A4 if it was big enough inside, but it ain't.

Default what vintage is your current A4? I see your account id is low (231) which could

mean you have an older A4. The new model is substantially larger, could be just what you need?

I have a 2002 1.8 TQ Avant B6 currently. Previously had a 2000 B5 1.8tq Avant, and prior to that a 1996 1.8 TQ sedan

Default ok, so you're already maxed out on the A4 (size-wise). That being the

case it sounds as though the A6 is your logical choice?
