A6 won't start

Default A6 won't start
Tried to start the 2.7T this morning to no avail. I'm sure it isn't the battery as the car seems to have full juice (i.e. radio, lights, power windows, etc.). When I engage the key all I get is a high pitch whine (almost like rush of air really). Options I suppose are alternator, starter, not engaging the flywheel? I'm thinking starter or something else preventing the flywheel from engaging. Anyone know what the symptoms of each would be?

Starter is not engaging the flywheel. Assuming battery is strong, bad starter.

2nd. Everytime my starters went out it always made weird noises.

How easy a DIY would the starter repalcement be?
