It is also used for brake proportioning. Without it, the rear brakes will lock up early. Dangerous.

I've replaced the electronics on both the A8 and the A6.

Default i had the same issue, i needed pads, changed them and the prob went away. i would start there

since you already need pads...

Default No perhaps about it. There's no way the pads affect the ABS and BRAKE lights.

I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, but doubt you can do so.
