I see that companies rebuild these. Can I drive the car and will the breaking system operate (without ABS) without the control module?
Thanks,
Thanks,

antilock will not operate, neither will the electronic brake assist (if so equipped).
You will have some sort of braking.
One thing; many cars have stronger rear brakes than is really necessary for an unladen car...the abs controls the wheel lockup when the rear wheels lock up first...this is why you really need to stand on the brakes hard when the abs kicks in if you really want maximum brake/minimum distance to stop.
Without the abs it's unlikely the brake system is balanced such that all four wheels do their thing...the rears will likely lock up first although quattro likes to keep them turning. If you drive without the abs, do some experimentation and see what happens at the limit of braking car control-wise.

I drove my avant for the week it took to get the module back. I didn't have to panic brake tho. Brakes behave pretty much like normal in regular driving. Make sure you cover the connectors and the face of the solenoid array.

Agree with radhaz, in a C5 with a Bosch modulator you can remove the ABS module without breaking the hydraulic system. And drive the car in a reasonable manner without ABS. There is an alternative. I've used ModuleMaster for rebuild of my Bosch C5 unit, and BBA Reman for rebuild of my Ate VW unit (yes, I'm a glutton for punishment) Both companies may have your ECU unit in stock that they can send out on an exchange basis. You return yours to them for a core refund.
I did this with my Bosch C5 and the unit they sent worked perfectly. No re-coding was necessary. This way the car was never without ABS.
Both companies are very reputable, do great work, and offer a lengthy warranty.
Good luck!

figure it this way, your ABS does not work now if your module is bad, you will not notice anything different with the module removed! but it is best to cover everything once the module is removed to keep it clean! and spray it off with electric parts cleaner before you put the new module back on.
