Is it ok to turn on the ac first thing in the morning when u start the car..houston weather is terrible..also when it is a bit muggy outside my windshield fogs up outside right where the air hits from the defrost vents..because when i turn the ac from auto to just the front vents the fogging stops... thanks for your help...

Default When I bought a car in Houston they said turn on the AC and leave it on always.

I never turn off my AC here in San Jose. Remember, this is climate control, so it maintains a consistent temperature all year round, heat or cool. I'm not sure I followed your question clearly, but my response is to turn it on and leave it on, adjust the vents where they do the best for you.

Default Here's the problem with that

The compressor will cycle on and off on its own, probably more than it really needs to, and you're going to get mildew in the system and that lovely smell in the vents.

The better course of action is to leave the system on ECON unless you know for sure that you will be wanting A/C. My wife bought a used C Class that smelled really, really bad because the previous owners (probably not knowing any better) left it on A/C for 2 straight years. It took some heavy-duty disinfecting in the service dept. to cure it.

Default How do you know that was the prob? I had my AC on for 2 years with my A6 with little smell.

Living in Houston with 90% humidity most of the time will pretty much guarantee mildew. I say keep it on and keep the sweat stains off your clothes.

Default How do you figure you will end up with mildew? The system also controls humidity in the car.

My father has always had his AC on in his past 4 BMWs, and they all smell brand new when he sells them.

Default I turn it on in the morning sometimes, just leave the windows open

until the air coming out of the vents is cool.

Default Oh it was definitely the problem

Once they nuked the A/C system with industrial-strength whatever, everything was and remains fine.

Hey, if Houston is that bad (and I don't doubt it), go for the A/C. Just remember that uncle phred warned ya.

Default Yes it does control humidity

by drawing it out of the air and, in theory, dribbling it on the ground as you drive.

However, it can puddle in the system and just sit there festering. Home A/C systems can do this too.

I think it would depend more on the quality of the climate control system.

It's that bad, unless it's changed in the last 20 years.
