Default AC Fan failure... Possible to rig up temporarily?

Alrighty then... I am out of town with my family and temperatures and humidity are rising fast. I can't afford to buy a new fan module yet and am in dire need of my AC. The AC failed a few days ago (post url below). The main symptom is the passenger-side electric fan that cools off the radiator/condensor stopped spinning (but the viscuous fan still works). I'm not overheating, but the AC blows hot, and when I have hit rainstorms, my windshield has fogged completely. Is it possible to bypass the module and just run 12v straight to the fan? Wiring diagrams for the fan connector would be most helpful, as well as plug identification info (color, shape, etc.). Thanks!

Fan issue

Default That sounds like more than just a fan failure. Is the car cool at speed?

Hot in traffic, fine when you are at highway speeds?

Default No...

Hot always. Maybe it's a temp sensor or something gone bad. Part of the reason I want to jump the fan directly is to see if the fan cools the AC. If not, then I have a whole new direction to look.

Default More info...

The problem started suddenly- the fan stopped spinning the same time the AC stopped cooling. I'm thinking it's most likely an electrical problem. I've tried all fuses, including the 40A fuse under the dash. No dice- no blown fuses.

Default The fan isn't spinning because the control unit isn't turning it on.

My guess is no freon - bad evaporator :-(

My wife's car has the same problem. I charge the air every Spring.

Default You mean you know it leaks but you keep on re-charging it? I got severly reprimanded....

for suggesting I might have a go at re-charging the A/C on my A6 myself because of the risk of venting R134a into the environment.

I think you should make the effort to fix it. Put in some gas with UV to help locate the leak and fix it once and for all!

You will feel better for it, clear concsience etc....and the gas could be leaking into the passenger compartment and slowly gassing your other half......now there's a thought!

Default I know where the leak is.

It's the evaporator. And with 195k on the car, it's not getting a new one; BTDT with the old 90 and it's no fun. This Summer or next will be the last for this car, depending on what comes along for a replacement. The leak is small, 134a does not damage the ozone, and I can get it charged a dozen times for the cost of the evaporator. This goes against the grain for me too, but it just makes financial sense.

As for charging it yourself, you should have been reprimanded, but not for the environmental impact, but because it is extremely difficult to get it right and dangerous as well with only a high port.

Default I know now, after the bit of research I did here and the feedback I received....

I went against the grain as well and took it to my local garage. They did a full purge and re-fill with dye so if it develops a leak I will be able to find it and fix it before the re-fill it for again.

I guess over time all refrigerants will leak out of the compressor seals in a perfectly good system.

Default Pretty sure that's not it

This did not happen gradually, but suddenly- I would think that the freon level being low would be evident via poor cooling before it got low enough to cause the fan to stop.
