So I drug the wife outside today and had her plop around in the back seat to test what is causing the air bag light to illuminate. I confirmed the following:

* Neither side of the rear bench causes the air bag light to illuminate when a passenger is in it.
* The middle seat of the rear bench does not illuminate the air bag with just the belt buckled.

<b>* The middle seat does cause the air bag light to illuminate when someone is sitting in the seat.</b>

Can someone else test this for me perhaps? Given that it's such a specific instance, I have to believe the car is functioning as intended - which still means I must ask, <b>"Why?"</b>

If I didn't know any better I'd say that the seat is rubbing against a wire when someone is sitting in the middle...

I just tried sitting in the middle of my 02 Avant(has side air bags) and nothing. I tried my 03 A6 w/o side air bags and nothing as well. Doesn't seem normal. Good luck.
