So far, I have removed the radio, trim (around the radio, climate control), climate control head, ashtray, and centre console insert. I thought this would be enough to get to the air bag control unit (module) to replace it, but I can only see a small portion of it, let alone the rear bolts/nuts.

To give an idea of where I am now:

Has anyone been able to change it without removing more, or will I need to (as the Bentley suggests) remove the whole center console (rear), vent, armrest, and center console (front)?

Are there any useful tips or tricks I should know about at this point?

"Airbag Control Unit..." I think that's how my ex used to refer to herself when we went to parties.

Just follow the Bentley instructions, should have everything off within 30-45 minutes.
