Airbag didn't go off, was hit at 40mph
I was stopped in traffic and some bonehead slammed in to me at about 40mph (w/ a '91 Ford pickup). Both rear fenders buldged out, back doors can't shut, frame and floor twisted, buckles in the roof above the back door windows, drivers door barely shuts, gears stripped in drivers seat, back seat won't fold back up.
After all this, my airbag never went off. Should I be concerned. Should I report this in to Audi?? The insurance deemed it a total loss. Now I may look at the 4.2 now that the 2.7T is done.

.....Luckly, you seem OK.................
I don't believe the airbags will go off in a rear-end collision.

I don't think the airbag would help in a rear-end hit. Your headrests are what keep you from getting whiplash. It sounds like you had quite a shot, be glad you are ok.

Re: How did the drivers seat hold up?
When I returned to the car, the headrest had been pushed all the way back and the seatback had been pushed back a little as well. It felt like I was one of those guys driving those ridiculous Civic's or Corolla's.
The seat did go back to my normal driving position. The guy at Eurosport (here in MA) said that the gears were stripped inside though.

Front airbags deploy with deceleration force . . .
getting hit from behind causes acceleration force (as measured by the sensors). Your seat back, head rest and side airbags would be your primary cushion. Since side force not sufficient or a non-issue altogether, no side airbag.
You can also be in a head on collision and have no airbag deploy. It all has to do with the force of deceleration.
The rear crush zones really work well. Good luck with the repair and don't worry.

The front airbag will not go off in a rear impact nor will they....
...go off unless the car is moving above 5mph or so (Depends on manuf.) I believe the side impact bags will deploy at any speed. There is no benefit to the front airbag going off when hit from the rear. You may have had more injuries from the bag going off - like burns etc.. from the gases, it is a pretty violent thing when they do go.
P.S. I see a 2.7T and the new REV in your future!!!
