Airbag Warning Light

Just got word from the dealer that the airbag warning light on my 01 A6 may be due to a bad control module. I was quoted $1000 to replace the module. However, the codes (65535 and 00588) also indicate that the problem may be in the driver's airbag and I was quoted another $1000 for replacing. The car is 6 1/2 year old but only has 40K miles. I'm estimating the car may be worth about $12000. Anyone know of any solution short of the $2000 the dealer wants that will at a minimum simply turn-off the airbag warning light? I recently bought a VAG-COM cable and software off of Ebay and it couldn't even read the airbag module, or any other module for that matter.
Thanks for any suggestions!

If it can't be read, then the module is likely dead (not uncommon). The replacement is a do-it-yourself job, but involves taking a lot of components off. In addition to a decent set of 1/4" metric sockets, you'd need to make/borrow/buy radio removal tools, IIRC...I have pictures of when I swapped mine at home.
Also, I bought a used airbag controlled (after I understood why the donor vehicle was a total...tree fell on it) for $100...works like a champ and is much better than the ~$500 dealer cost new. My two cents.

Sorry, my message was unclear on the VAG-COM. Yes, I did buy a non-Ross Tech cable from eBay that wouldn't recognize any module. The dealer gave me the print-out from there analysis and didn't even charge me for the results. I would still like to find some other alternative, not as expensive as the dealer quoted.

know where I can purchase a brand new (not a used one) airbag control module for a reasonable price? And how much would it run?
I searched ECS... and German Auto Parts and Nada. Nothing.
Ohh... a part # would help too! for an '01 2.7T Thanks!

I was quoted $630 (new) for the module and 3.5 hours of labor to replace. My anxiety revolves around the uncertainty of whether that will fix the problem.
