Another tranny story...

I bought a 99 A6 exactly 1 week ago and finally got it in for a 60,000 mile service yesterday. I had also noticed a delay then sudden engagament of the transmission so I asked to have that checked too. The dealer said no error codes were found but the transmission needed to be replaced. Bummer... After reading some of the posts on this site, I decided I would opt for the transmission service instead of the replacement. The dealer responded that there was zero chance that it would help do to "excesive play in the final drive".
Has anyone else been given this story? Is it valid?

On my 2001 2.7T the transmission was replaced at about 9K because of a faulty batch of valves. Even with the new transmission, it can sometimes lag and then jerk hard into gear - Not very often and impossible to deliberately repeat. This has happened during typical rush hour traffic - slow acceleration, stop, start, etc. I think the software goes bonkers and doesn't know which program to follow because of so much variability in driving pattern.
I also sometimes notice a lag upon acceleration in the morning when everything is cold - sort of repeatable - but not a hard jerk.
It would be nice to know what diagnostics lead to the conclusion to replace the transmission. If its covered by warranty, then have it replaced!
