As long as the new cluster hasn't been installed it should work.
I think you'll need a vag-com to collect the data from your cluster and put it on the new one, i.e., the odometer reading from your cluster.
STFA for the procedure or just take the new cluster to a dealer..shouldn't cost more than an hour of labor. IIRC, the vag-com has to read your cluster before the new one is installed, then it transfers the data.

it MIGHT work. not sure if you have an immobilizer II or III, because those require a "secret key"
code, aka "SKC" on the tab of the original keys as a cardboard "dog tag" handed to the owner of original purchase.
I'm not too sure if they started w/ 2002 and up but the 4.2 might have different rules...

Will have to visit dealer anyway to have keys re-coded to new cluster...
Just had the cluster replaced as part of my last warranty service ('04 2.7T Tip). The Tech explained that the cluster is an integral part of the security system and keys have to be coded to it. Not sure if this will prevent you from starting your car after replacing the cluster or not.
