Anyone ever experience "surging" at very light throttle?? ('01 2.7T, 6 spd.)

I've searched archives but haven't found a similar problem. When I hold very light (almost closed throttle) in 3rd gear around 35 mph, I get a surging or almost a "bucking" condition. It doesn't happen all the time and it can vary in intensity. The engine isn't lugging.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what's happening and a possible fix?

What bugs me is the surge after backing off the pedal to a position maybe 2/3 floored from a position completely floored. The feeling is that the throttle is first open (floored) then closed during the pedal movement from floored to 2/3, then opened again after pedal movement stops at the 2/3 position. My head flails back and forth from the unexpected accelerations. Maybe I just need a new head.
