Anyone have a rat chew into their gas tank?
I discovered I had, as I completed fueling up, and found gas running out from under my car at a disturbing rate. I moved the car to a dirt lot and awaited the fire dept and tow truck. It continued to leak for another 5 minutes - maybe 15 gallons total.
So, certainly a bizarre experience. I wonder what might have happened when I moved the car - stray spark could have been caused from any number of sources. I should have told the gas station operater to call 911, turn off his pumps and I should not have started car. (I did tell him of the leak so he was aware of the danger). I also wonder what may have happened if the tank held the gas until I got home and then released in my garage. My furnace is nearby...
Now I'm worried about the interior of the car reeking of gas and there being additional damage, undetectable at this time, but waiting for an inopportune moment to present itself. Also waiting for new fuel tank to arrive and be installed. Luckily, my insurance is picking up the $1700 repair. Of course I'm paying $1100 to rodent proof my rural home.
Anyone else experience this? Rodent humor is appreciated...
So how much are 2002 S6's these days?

Re: How do you know it was a rat?
Going on assessment of dealer and insurance adjuster. Also, exterminator found evidence of critters in my garage. Could not tell you if it was a mouse or rat, but I believe it was a critter and not some kind of manufacturing default. I felt better that it was a rodent and not Audi.

A rat took up residence in my front bumper by passenger side wheel.
Found leaves and stuff crammed in there and poop on top of the manifold. Wasnt there for very long it seems. Had the car parked outside for the past 3 weeks. All wiring seems to be fine.

Had a squirrel chew through my lawn mower tank in the garage...
It had taken up residence in the garage rafters (after chewing an access portal in the bottom of the wood door). The lawn and garden shop where I had purchased the mower had never seen anything like it. Luckily, the hole was in the top so no gas. B*stard squirrel.

Rat crawled up inside dash and could not get out...
of my fathers Buick Park Avenue.
My company mechanic pulled the car apart and found the dead rat in a small passage way the rat could not turn around in
Car was junk in a weeks time. The smell would not go away. I spent probably $1,000 with different detailers including the guy that fogs used cars to remove cigarette smell. Nothing worked and the car was junked.
