Default Anyone have a Tie Rod(not end) go bad??

I experieinced some weird shiimying on the right front of my car the other night and got real nervous. While installing my winter wheels, I started investigating and found that the Tie Rod(not the ends that have been recently replaced) on the right of the car has som serious play. I cannot see what is going on as it is covered by a boot, but if I move the whole rack, I see teh play, it moves about 1/2".

So, I am taking it in! Unless someone can convince me this is an ez fix?? Gotta have my CV joint boots replcaed as well.

Default I thought it was all one piece...

The tie rod and "end" are sold together(?) Perhaps a defective replacement or not installed properly?

Default The ends are replaceable via stock or aftermarket...

But it connects to teh tie rod itself. I hope I am using the correct terminology. I believe the Tie Rod itself connects to the steering rack...and the Tie Rod end connects to the arms that move the wheels. Most people on the board have bad Tie Rod ends.....but my problem is behind the big accordian boot that covers where the Tie Rod meets the Tie Rod end.

Default These were the upgraded Audi OEM part I believe.

I don't think they sell the version that came on our cars anymore.
