Anyone here experience noisy lifters on start-up?
I started my 4.2 tonight for the first time in 3 days. Immediately upon start-up, I heard the clickety-click of noisy lifters; it lasted for maybe 2 or 3 seconds and then went away. I know that this is due to a momentary lack of oil due to sitting for several days, but I never experienced it on my 2.8 even after it sat without being started for a week or longer. Has anyone else here experienced this?

I thought I'd pushed a valve into a cylinder one day...the sound was so bad.
Check that the screws are secure at all contact points on your plastic runner cover over...the intake runners, duh.
I had one loosen up and it sounded like tappets gone bad. The sound is gone now, and hasn't loosened again.
Of course, I do now hear the pinging with some brands of gasoline...76 brand seems to cure it, but something I'm gonna make them check (and hopefully fix?) at my 10K service in 2,500 miles.

I often experience the same thing on my 2002 S6 w 15k miles
It goes away after 3-4 minutes - sometimes a little longer.
I asked my audi dealer about the noise and he said I should not worry about it.
I will probably try a slightly heavier oil to see if that makes the problem go away.

I always groan whenever I lift something heavy....
Actually, I can't comment on your situation, because there is never a day I don't drive my 4.2. :^D
All I can say is to remember you have an awful lot of lifters now. ;^)

Heavier oil will make the problem worse...... I think
...cause it'll take longer to pump through the passages. A lighter oil should speed oil flow and reduce the duration of the lifter noise - it is pretty common though...

Sounds liek a tin can of nails being shaken for several seconds? Yup, got that.
IIRC, the S8 had it as well and pretty much to the same extent. The V6s did do it, but not as noticably until they had 30 or 40k on them.
I was told not to worry when I queried it on the S8, so I'm assuming the same applies to the RS 6. I don't think there's enough friction generated in those few seconds to cause any problems.
As an aside, the A2 also has a "nails in a tin can" rattle but you have to really listen to hear it over the diesel-like clatter of the little FSI lump firing up.

Decreased when I went from 0-30 to 5-30 M1
I started a thread on this same subject a few months back. We have a number of cars and tend to drive them in spurts of a few days on and then not for a few days. I noticed immediately that when I went from the factory fill to M1 0W-30 that both the frequency and intensity of the clatter increased and wrote that post asking for opinions on oil just before I made my last change. I then went to M1 5-30 and it definitely reduced the intensity of it. Despite my dislike for Amsoil's general marketing philosophy I'm considering trying their 5-30 on my next change just for comparison.
