what the pump costs and also labor $$$.

The pump looks quite accessible at the rear of the engine, might be an easy DIY job.

Any experiences here?

Default ~$460 for the pump, maybe hour to 1 1/2 hours labor , so figure 100-150 labor

Wnat year is the car, how many miles on it?. When did it go out of Audi warranty?

Default Hey Ming, thanks for the info. It is a '00 2.7T, 47K miles, I've been out of

warranty since Dec. 2002. I've had the car since new. I recently purchased an extended warranty, looks like this will be a test of their commitment to me!

Since you know the specifics on the pump. have you had to replace yours too? Mine started throwing CEL, when I VAG-ed it codes said Insufficient Air Flow (both banks). Now the pump sounds like an air raid siren when I start it up (cold starts only, which is logical).

Sounds like I'd better call the dealer and make an appointment...

wouldn't the insufficient air flow be caused by a bad MAF?

Default dec 02 out of warranty? or December 03?

Called my service person, he said you may try to have audi cover it since your less than a few months after the warranty period, if it ended dec 03.
My pump did the loud air sound also. WIll look for the service record on it when I get home.

Default I guess it could but here's where the Vag-Com came in handy -it told me flat out that the secondary

air injector system was broken. That plus the noise that the pump makes now (sounds like a friggin' air raid siren when starting up from cold) tells me that part is broken. A quick check with my Bentley's manual to identify the part and - - voila, diagnosis checked and confirmed three differrent ways.

Now all I need to do is fix it!

Default Mine's on the fritz as well and my extended warranty co. (Warrantybynet) won't...

cover it. Unless I'm mistaken, it's a part of the emissions system, which is excluded from coverage. Sucks for me!

Default Re:

On my 4.2 the CEL came on with the Sec. Air Inj. pump code. I also noticed it making some strange noises at start up. A little searching in the engine compartment resulted in finding some frayed/ripped vacuum lines. Replaced all I could reach with new lines and I haven't had the problem since.

On my Jetta 1.8T, I had the same pump issues. The car sounded like a straight-up diesel at start up. The aluminum rivets were slowly falling off one by one. I took the pump off, drilled out the rest of the rivets, and bolted the pump together. No problems since and the car has almost 100k miles now.

Default So you spew out extra pollution when the engine is cold. Why jack with it?

When the engine is warm, are there any problems?
