Default I think 60 Minutes begat the 100/200 (5000 renamed) then in '92 C4 platform 100, '95 A6 C4 platform

Muhammad can probably tell you exactly what happened and what the differences were. Being a C4 guy I know the engine fuel injection has changed some, compression ratio ( I have the least powerful engine), things like that.

Default I could be wrong but...

the 100 was 2 different cars...one from 89-91, the second from 92-94, after which it became the A6. It came with a 130 HP 5-cylinder in the first one, the second came with the old V6 172 HP.

The 200 was available from '89-91 and was essentially the same as the original 100, but came with a 162 HP I5T, then a 227 HP I5T.

The V8 was available from '89-'94 and was originally available with a 3.6L 240 HP V8. In 1992, it came with a 4.2L 276HP V8. I believe it is essentially the same car, chassis-wise as the original 100/200, but was the V8 version...just as the current A6 4.2 is a variant of the A6 3.0 or 2.8.

Well, that's the way I see it...although perhaps the V8 was a little more of the pre-cursor to the A8 which became available in 1997.

You had better not be pulling that info out of memory. That's some good detail!

Quick research in the Historical Model Guide perhaps? :-)

Default Family Lineage

1980s => early 90s => mid 90s
------------------------------
4000 => 80/90 => A4
5000 => 100/200 => A6
sub-family: UrS4 => S6
N/A => V8 => A8

The Audi 5000 (which was a NA-only moniker) was sold as the 100/200 in other markets. The 100 was the non-turbo version, while the 200 declared the turbo motor. With the the introduction in 1996 of the A4, Audi shifted its entire model line to Ax. The 100-to-A6 shift was primarily cosmetic with, among other things, the intorduction of projector headlights - this was also true for the original S4 (which was based on the 100), changing its name to S6.

Default Yes, it was. The 200 was the turbo version. The "100" and "200" designations

were an attempt by Audi to change the public's perception of the "5000" model designation; so crucial because of the damage done to that model's (and the marque's) image by the "60 Minutes" hatchet-job on the 5000 and its alleged propensity for "unintended acceleration".
