swapping to stock ecu, was wondering how one goes about recoding the ecu so that the car actually starts when you swap them.

Take a look at the VAG-COM Yahoo group and do a search. Gets discussed a lot over there. Sorry, I have never had any reason to dabble with this problem.
For 2002 (and perhaps late 2001), you need to get a code from the dealer along with their workshop#. Or you go to one of the tuners that has cracked this.
Good luck!

Before swapping ECU's, use VAG-COM to read the 14-digit Immobilzer Serial number from the Instrument Cluster. The Cluster should show the 17-Digit VIN and the 14-digit immobilizer serial in the "Extra" area under "Controller
* Using the 14-digit immobilizer serial number, obtain the corresponding 4-digit "Secret Code". At the moment, the only way I know of to get this is through a Dealer who will look it up in his on-line system.
*With 4-digit "Secret Code" in hand, swap ECU's. Now access 01-Engine, go to ADAPTATION, Channel 50. Put in the 4-digit Secret Code (append a leading 0!). Note: You only get three tries at this. After 3 incorrect tries, the ECU will "lock" for a period of time.
if you have an apr chip you can also use the apr clone program...you can only clone from a stock ecu to an apr ecu tho, not in reverse...ie cloning from an apr ecu to a new stock ecu.
