Anyone know if 2.7t(A6) oil filter will work on a 1.8t(A4)?

Default Will it? Yes. Should you? No. The 068-115-561-B filter that you should use has some needed extra oil

capacity to help prevent sludge buildup.

Default So if I put in little extra oil, is that OK.

The reason I ask is my freind is in a real jam. I beleive his oil pump is on the way out....however I noticed he has been getting his oil changed at Jiffy lube.....They have been putting in non synthetic 15w30, and he currently has some cheepo generic oil filter in it. He brought it to me b/c he heard a "rattle".The "rattle" is a lifter slamming into the cover so hard, that you can't even hear yourself think! If you rev the engine and get the oil up in there the tap goes away but at idle....look out! I'm just looking to throw one of mine on w/ the correct oil to see if that is the problem. Or if he needs a new pump.

Carson: Why is it that Audi recommends a larger filter for the 1.8T engine and not for the 2.7T?

Default There are 2 differences between the B suffix and J suffix - J one has 3 bar bypass pressure setting

vs 2.5 bar for the B suffix, and B suffix holds like .3 liter or so more oil. Go for it, just don't leave the small filter on for 10k miles...(like anyone would try going that long anyway).

Default Also, save that POS generic filter, as they are not built to withstand the pressures generated by

Audi engines. If the media disintigrated and clogged oil passages, etc you will need it as proof that the filter trashed the engine. Not likely, but I'd hang onto it until I proved otherwise. Definitely NOT OEM spec, regardless of what the quick lube place tells you...

Small sump and sludge issues.

Default Two diffs. but not for the reasons that you state. Higher bypass relief press. allows sludge....

filtering for a longer period before bypassing the sludge into the lube system. Larger capacity means larger active filter area, thus also longer life before bypass. Retained oil volume is not a point in the 1.8's sludge fight!

Default Another old Audi wives tail is perpetuated! Oil pressure in any engine is limited by the...

pump's relief valve setting, Audi's being no higher than any other car of the same vintage. The only failure that can cause ANY filter to rupture is a stuck closed or clogged oil pressure relief valve. Not a filter fault!

Default Thanks guys, used the A6 filter. The tap is much better but still there.

By better I mean half the volume and it only lasts a few seconds. Before it would only go away if you raised the RPM's, it would consistantly tap at idle. Now it only taps when you start the engine for about 3 seconds. Still a problem though...just not as bad.
