complete with "wine glass" wheels. The red wagon in the ad looks a lot like an A6 Avant in profile.

Hmmmm. 72 cu. ft. of space for $26k+, if I were shopping now (I'm not) it would argue for a look, though I think this is a Mitsubishi based Volvo, no?

Default Not Mitsubishi based. It could be Mazda based.

Like Mazda, Volvo is part of Ford Motors. Mitsubishi is part of Daimler Chrysler Motors.

Default Cars have gotten so generic, and it is so risky when someone tries something new (Bangle).

If you could go back in time 25 years and show someone a lineup of modern cars, they would have a hard time distinguishing them.

That's one thing I respect about Chrysler. They do break the mould.

Default It is based on the Mazda/Ford global platform.....

...and seems well done. Size wise it is much closer to an A4 than an A6. Volvo has tweaked it enough so that it feels like a Volvo rather than a Mazda or Ford......

Default Actually it looks just like a Mazda 6, not at all like an AUDI IMO.

Can you tell them apart?

Default Mitsubishi is not related to Volvo...

Ford is along with Mazda, Jag, etc.
Mitsu shared some Chrysler stuff in the past , but DC has since bailed out on Mistu.

Default Am I confusing the V40 as being a Mazda, not Mitsu-based design...

that was definitely NOT what I expect in a Volvo based on all reports...

Default If you see the red version in full side profile in the print ad, it's very A6-like.

I agree in the 3/4 view it's more Mazda-like. The side resemblance was much closer to the A6.

Default The old S40 and V40 were derived from Mistsubishi economy cars.

It was a leftover deal from when Mitsu and Volvo were much closer. The funny thing is then they assembled the sucker in a Daf plant in the Netherlands. That was most certainly a bastard child.

The current generation is as others have said, based on the latest Ford Focus/Mazda chassis. Ironically, Ford America is going to stay with the old Focus, because they are concerned about potential reliability issues with the new platform.

Yes, they do stick their necks out - often in a good way - unlike GM.
