There should be a screw-in stud in the tool kit. If it's missing, see your dealer; they should provide you with one free of charge. I've
changed a tire using the factory supplied jack
and found that as long as you're on level smooth
ground, no problem. If you get stuck changing it
on uneven and/or soft terrain though, look out.

I had the exact same problem-- the metal u shaped piece spread apart. The jack collapsed and the front rim of my A6 hit the ground after I had the tire off. I was lucky nothing of me was in the way. I went out and bough a heavy duty hydraulic jack that I keep in the trunk.

It explains how to get around the lack of studs in the manual. It is also spelled out in pictures in the wheel well, or under the trunk carpet, I can't remember which.

but fortunately no damage was done as the rotor/caliper landed on the inside of the wheel that I let go of just in time before it took my hands with it. The U-shaped metal parts that support the white plastic piece splayed outward causing the jack to fall 1/2 inch or so which gave it momentum to fall over. Audi gave me a new jack set and has since said "it looks like the jack was defective, the plastic piece didn't fit right in the metal part". I will never use the new one, except for the new alignment tool. I got a heavy-duty full scissor which could hold this car up on a 30 degree angle ![Wink](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
As John Simcox said, use the plastic alignment tool, although it is do-able with just your foot and the center ring.

Same here, always loved Audi's jacks though this one is a bit tricky to fold. My toolkit lacked the cap puller, which made it a bit of a problem. But I've used the jack on several occasions including at SFO. Yup, I did read the manual carefully.
I was thinking of using the jack to help me out of my 'situation' yesterday...
