Default "regulatory incentive"

If memory serves, the initial 155 mph limit was put in place in response to Germany's Green party denouncing the uber-sedan's capabilities and pushing for some regulatory limits. The manufacturers wanted to avoid that kind of intrusive assistance and decided on a voluntary limit.

Farg the regulations... BRING IT ON! Oh, wait, Kerry says that now. One more cool saying beaten to death by a democrat. Crap.

Momentum varies linearly with velocity. Kinetic energy with the square of velocity. Not exponential.

"Squared" is an "exponent", just like "cubed" and "to the Xth power" is an "exponent".

Default E=1/2MVsquared is an exponential relationship.

Exponential relationships can be to any power other than 1, which is a linear relationship. You are correct that momentum varies lineraly with velocity and energy varies with the square of the velocity. The square is what makes it exponential as opposed to linear.

Default Semantically, yes, but...

...this isn't really the correct usage. What's generally understood in technical terms to be an "exponential" increase takes the form of e^x, whereas (as has been noted) kinetic energy varies as x^2, which is parabolic. Use Excel or something and graph the two. They are quite different. HPH
