The demographic thread below got me to wondering how many of you had an Audi Fox. I did but it was back in 1978. I can't even remember what year it was but I was most impressed with some of the simple, elegant engineering in it. It hooked me and ultimately led me to my A6 Q.

From what I remember it handled well and was pretty quick. There was a lot of engine noise & the interior was rather spartan.
For reasons I can't remember, he didn't have it long. The next car was a GM X-body and after that was a Cimarron. I'm still laughing.

I don't think a lot of people realize it, but the Audi Fox was the grandfather of all the VW/Audi watercooled cars that have come since then. The gene pool for all these models all started with the B1 Audi 80 of 1972. For instance, the VW/Audi 4 cylinder, Audi V6, inline 5, Audi V8, and now the Lamborghini V10 are all part of an engine family that trace their roots back to the EA 827 engine designed for the B1.
I've always feared Audi Foxes were only remembered for rust, and electrical problems, so it's really nice to hear of people who entered the world of Audi because of the Fox.

This photo should bring back some memories (rust prone areas, hood paint suffering from massive thermal torture, brake jobs in the driveway, the rubber strips around the bumper not staying on, the heater blowing ice crystals in the winter, the floor mysteriously being damp, the bucket o'tools and duct tape in the trunk) if you kept on top of it, the car looked like the pic. Mine did for the most part and I valet parked it with pride<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/1063/firstcar.jpg">

Of course I remember the Audi Fox as my mom purchased one brand new in 1979 (just before she was pregnant with me!). She sold it in the mid-80's, but as "Audi" was the first word I learned to say, I've been hooked ever since. I bought a 98 Audi A4 2.8Q manual in college, then it cratered due to extensive elecrical problems (hit by a drunk driver, go figure), so I sold it for a Mazda 6 V-6 (and have almost regretted it). Still bitten by the Audi bug, I bought and restored a 1985 Audi 4000S 5spd, and have now just bought a 1977 Audi Fox GTi project car for $100. I can't bear to see these old underrated Ur-German cars fall by the wayside (the Fox was just days from being crushed despite still being able to run). I plan to keep on "saving the Audis" from extinction the same way my grandfather restored the cars from his youth. (56 T-bird, 67 Stingray, 69 Cougar, 71 Buick convertible, 36 Oldsmobile, 1912 Studebaker, 58 De Soto, etc....)

Save a 1978 audi fox from sitting in the driveway and rusting. has the dual sunroof and a lot new parts. Husbands heart gave out before he could finish it!
