I'm the owner of a 1998 A6, when I purchased the car I recieved one 2 button Remote key, along with one workshop key and the plastic key along with a plastic case with a few code numbers inside.
I would like to get a spare remote key, but don't want to pay the prices Audi are asking.
I am wondering if I were to buy a remote as sold on ebay:
Audi Remote
1. Would a 3 button remote work with my vehicle, or do I need a 2 button.
2. Can I program the remote using the instuctions posted on this board to just lock/unlock the doors of the vehicle without the correct keyblade?
3. What do I need to do to get a new keyblade? Do Audi have to cut/program these? If so, at what cost and were can I find the code for the correct key to be cut?
4. Or can it be cut independantly?
Thanks in advance.

...which was the 3-button type (actually 4 buttons, but anyway) and it programmed just fine using the directions found here on AW. I re-used my existing key (upper portion of FOB), but, as far as getting a blank, I dunno...I have heard that a VW dealer can copy/cut Audi keys and are often less pricey.
Worst case scenario; you buy a $20 3-button on ebay and it's incompatible...just re-list it and get your $20 back! :P Good luck with it.

I got a 3 button fob from "lemonpro" on Ebay with a blank key for under $50. Took it to the closest dealer and they cut it for free.
Your results my vary.

Thanks for the replies.
I am based in the UK and have found a company who can provide & cut the key blanks for £18.
So am I right in thinking I could then program the remote myself using the new key so that it would lock unlock the vehicle, but for it to work with the immobilisor it has to be coded by an Audi dealer?
