►Auto tranny vs 45 degree incline◄

The other day I visited a friend who has a steep driveway with an incline of about 45 degrees. In his driveway I stopped my car, moved the lever into Park, got out, and started chatting with him. 30 seconds later he starts screaming "your car is rolling". When I turned around my car was slowly (5mph) rolling down towards the main road. The engine was still running so I quickly caught up to it and pushed on the brakes. Luckily any possibility of damage was avoided. I was able to replicate this over and over again. If the hill is not as steep the vehicle doesn't roll back. Also, do note that when I move the shift lever into park the car feels like it goes into a locked position at first but a few seconds later the vehicle begins to roll!!!???
Question: Is this typical of automatic transmissions for the A6 2.7T? Did I not align something correctly when the rear main seal was replaced?
I believe my transmission is called Tiptronics as I can push the lever to the right and force the tranny to stay in a particular gear by either pushing up or down on the lever.

i'm dying to hear answers. I don't like what you're saying one bit. In "P" a pin should fall into place to hold the tranny from moving. Sounds like it is sheared off, or somehow works its way out.

it sounds like the parking pawl is broken..it is usually caused by parking on hills without setting the PARKING brake...it is a very expensive repair, if it was my car i would start putting it into park and setting the aptly named parking brake like the owners manual tells you to

this is why i hate automatic drivers... P on the transmission is just there so you cant remove the keys, its like a dummy switch.. to actually PARK the car you must use the "parking break".......

That's scary. If the parking pawl is the piece I'm thinking of (the only part that moves when you shift the selector into park), it looks pretty accessible on the transmission in my garage. Am I thinking of something else?
Also, I've put vehicles in park while they were still rolling and gotten that terrible clicking like baseball cards in the spokes, but my park mechanism still worked following those events. I was under the impression it was supposed to bend out of the way (however it works) to prevent catastrophic damage or loss of control if the shifter is put in park while moving. Isn't this the case?

ALWAYS put it into neutral and set the emergency/parking brake first, let it roll to a stop, THEN put it into P. This ensures that you are not subjecting the pin/pawl to unnecessary stress.
Although, frankly, this isn't as bad as my racing driver friend who refuses to park in gear and only sets the e-brake if there is a slope.
