Hi,

My Aux Water Pump (at least I think it the Aux Water Pump) whines really loud in the morning, but only at startup, for the first minute or so when the car is first started. But note: when it kicks on after a the car is hot and off/at rest it seems to run just fine; it is pretty quite.

It does not seem to be leaking.

IS THIS NORMAL or should I plan to replace it soon?


Car is 2000 A6 2.7t w/95K (I've only had it about 60 days).

Also note: I'm pretty sure it is the aux pump because it comes on with the aux fan and the sound comes from under the intake manifold, but I suppose I can't be sure...

aux pump does NOT come on while the car is running, it will only engage when the car is off....

OK - So I've heard twice now that the Aux pump does not come on at engine start, So What else could it be?

It only happens at start-up and it only seems to happen after the car is completely cool. If the car is warm it is quite as a mouse.

my guess would be the serp belt... as it heats up the whine goes away, try replacing that

Humm, Secondary Air Pump? - Well, first I'll have to find out what that is, but the next question is how loud is not normal?

Because when I drive away from my house, for that first block or so while its whining anybody on the street will turn to see what that noise is. Its not as loud as my horn but equally effective.

- It sounds like an electric motor of some kind (stands to reason) and when it stop whining it winds down something like a police siren.

A) What does this pump do?
B) Is it something I should attend to soon or is it non-critical?
C) How hard is it to fix if it needs fixing?

A)It's part of the emissions system and thus completely unnecessary. You will get a CEL if the thing dies though. The pump blows air into the exhaust to warm up the cats.

B) Non-ciritical by all means, but if it's that loud it's probably on it's way out. You can rebuild them (pics in my picture poster), but if they are rusty or orange on the inside it usually means your combi vales and/or vacuum lines are faulty. You will get CEL when it becomes a problem.

C) Easy to replace - 2 screws and 1 nut and it comes out. Replacement is super expensive from audi, but you can get them used for cheap (or rebuild)
