Axel Boot Question.......
My right front passenger axel boot is leaking grease everywhere and needs to be replaced. I bought the boot kit from the dealership but the repair shop I took my car to suggested I have the axel pulled and repacked rather than just fixing the boot?
What is the difference?
Anyone else had this problem or know the remedy? Car has 68K miles and I guess I will do both sides at once to avoid another down day at the shop.
Thanx!

I suppose they think that if dirt got into the.......
....joint it will eventully ruin it. Sounds like they are just being conservative.
Instead of just replacing the affected joint they suggest the whole axle because it's easier and usually cheaper.

It's a PITA to pull off the CV joint. The easiet way to do it is to pull the axle so you can put it on a work bench to work on it. Then once on the bench you can switch the CV joint.
Instead of the added labor of the CV joint just throw a new axle on a cut out a step. Lately, the price of axles make this cheaper than paying for a new joint and then the labor to replace it.
Rather this step is needed at all I couldn't say. The longer your CV boot has been ripped the more likely. It doesn't take much dirt to ruin a CV joint. Everytime I've tried to fix just the boot the clicking begins soon after anyway. I certainly see what the shop is doing.

I think it's cheaper to have the boot done
Just pull the entire axle, take apart the joint, clean, repack, and reinstall. Should be about $30 for the boot kit and anywhere from $80-150 for labor per side.
I don't know what a new axle costs, but it's probably $300 at least I would think.
