your stealer can retrofit a LATCH system for you. Or...
you can buy a seat that can make use of the 3 point belt. Personally, I do both and bought Recaro START child seats. Built like the proverbial brick sh*thouse.

Re: My dealer retrofitted my old '98 A6 with LATCH at no charge to me.
i asked my dealer parts dept and i might as well have asked them about some mercedes clutch system parts- they had no freakin clue- on top of which my nearest audi dealer is 200 miles away -blech
can you give me more info on the parts? or the dealer so i can contact them? thanks

If there is no LATCH system...
you don't use the special latch clips/hooks that are on the baby car seat. You will use the 3-point seat belt to secure it. The instruction book that came with the baby seat should show you how.

Even without LATCH, you can install any modern car seat with a shoulder belt
You feed the shoulder belt under the tabs right along with the lap belt.
This picture hopefully gives you an idea of what I'm talking about:
If you have a car seat that cannot be attached with a shoulder belt, you need to replace it as it is too old to be safe.
