Default That picture doesn't look very safe...

What's to prevent your child from doing a face plant into the rear seat back if you're rear ended?

Default ????

That's how all infant car seats are installed. The seat itself is actually quite reclined, the baby is in a nearly prone position while riding in the car seat, only sitting up enough to ensure that he can easily breathe.

The seat is also wedged quite tightly into the back of the seat, it's not going to tip backward in an significant way.

Finally, the car seat is *designed* to ride up and down a bit in a crash, that's part of how it dissipates crash energy.

Default If you look at how the belt is holding it in...

It is virtually impossible for the seat to fly forward without breaking the belt or the carseat. However, if you're rear ended, the seat is going to want to travel back and up. Perhaps I'm just not viewing the picture correctly, but in order to prevent that type of motion, you'd need something anchoring the seat a bit below and behind the baby's head, no? Otherwise it simply pivots up, treating the belt as a "hinge".

Anyway, god forbid you should get into an accident with your baby in the car. I just thought I'd point that out. I could be mistaken. It's been a few years since my kids were small enough to be in a rear-facing childseat.

Cheers,

Default The rear end of the car seat is about halfway up the seat back

The belt is attached to the top of the base, so it's belted about 8 inches off the seat bottom, and projects about 6 inches above that, so it's really not very hinge-like.

Also, the picture exaggerates the angle of the car seat, it's much closer to level than it seems.

Default We had LATCH put in our A4 but passed on the A6. The seat belts work fine for forward facing seats.

Pull the belt all the way out and it will ratchet as it goes back in. Put your knee in the seat and pull the belt. This will lock it tighter than a lap belt. LATCH is only good for kids less than 30 lbs. My boy should be there before 18 months!

Default The LATCH retrofit bolts to the floor under the back seat...

If you take out the lower seat cusion (it just pops out), there should be two threaded holes behind both the right and left back seats. The holes are covered with tape and the tape is painted, so it is hard to find, but you will see the square piece of tape. Peel off the tape and there is the hole to bolt the LATCH attachment onto. I got the parts from the dealer (for free) and then put them on myself because I did not want to leave the car all day for them to install them. The install took less than 30 minutes.
