"BMW BUMPS BANGLE
Bavarian Motor Works has bumped its controversial design director, Chris Bangle, "upstairs." The word, "visionary," has often been used to describe the expatriate American designer. With works like the new 5-Series, and the 7-er that preceded it, Bangle sought to dramatically reshape the staid BMW shape, but in the process, he touched off one of the loudest debates in recent automotive history. Critics even set up websites actively calling for Bangle's ouster. Word of a shake-up at BMW design had been circulating for some weeks. Now BMW has confirmed it is creating a new post for the 47-year-old Bangle, who will become director of BMW Group Design. In that position, he will still oversee future styling plans for BMW, as well as the Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorcycles brands. But Bangle will relinquish his hands-on activities. Those duties will now be assigned to Adrian van Hooydonk, the Belgian stylist who'd been running BMW's California-based DesignworksUSA. Despite the debate, BMW sales set a new record in the U.S. last year - helped by demand for the new Mini, as much as the new 5-Series - but in Europe, the maker has struggled to overcome the lackluster reception given the 5- and 7-Series models reshaped by Bangle."
