Hi,
My battery was replaced on my 1998 A6 back in June. My car wouldn't start for some unknown reason. I had driven to the deli in the morning to get breakfast, and when I came out, the car wouldn't start.
Anyway, they replaced the battery that time (still under warranty).
This past Saturday, I went to start my car, after not having driven it for 4 days. My car wouldn't start.
I love how both times, the computer said "press clutch to start car," (or something to that effect) even though I have an automatic transmission.
I'm wondering if this is possibly a problem with something that the battery is connected to, rather than the battery itself. Any ideas?
If it's at all related, I leave my car in a private garage every night and I don't arm the car when I leave. Could this possibly have anything to do with the battery dying?
Thanks for any help
Mike

could also be something is not turning off when the engine in turned off...draining battery overnight. I think the alternator stuff is more likely though.

First time the dealer replaced the battery but the second time they looked much closer. It turned out that the electric radiator fan and it's control circuit were bad. These components were always drawing power and so the battery would drain in a short time.
By the way, the first time this happened the dealer claimed that it was normal for an A6 to drain the battery after only a week or two of no running. I have left my 2001 2.7t for several weeks with no problems at all.
It is also possible that your voltage regulator is putting out the wrong voltage. If the voltage is too high the battery will go bad faster than normal, if the voltage is too low the battery will never charge properly and so it will drain to a level that won't start the car in a short time.
